Using the result

The figure you keep needs to cover what you'd want to earn as a salary, with some left over for quiet months. If it looks low, try a higher rate and see how much difference it makes. It's worth running it again whenever your hours or expenses change.

England, Wales & Northern Ireland rates. Scotland has its own income tax bands, so the figures for someone living in Scotland will be slightly different.

The estimate uses 2026/27 UK rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland: personal allowance £12,570 (reduced above £100k), basic rate 20%, higher rate 40% from £50,270, additional rate 45% from £125,140, and Class 4 NI at 6% / 2%. It's a guide, not accounting advice.
